South African National Blood Services

South African National Blood Service (SANBS) — campaign titled “Change a Life”, focused on platelet donation awareness.

Challenge

SANBS faced a serious shortage of platelet donors, even as demand was increasing for lifesaving treatments like cancer care and leukemia. Awareness around platelet donation was extremely low most people didn’t know what platelets were, who needed them, or how to donate.

Without education and strong emotional connection, it was difficult to recruit new donors. The challenge was to craft a campaign that would inform, inspire, and mobilize the public to take action quickly.

SANBS Campaign

Approach

Working as part of the AlienNation creative team, I contributed my multimedia and technical expertise to the “Change a Life” campaign.

I co-directed the “Meet Our Donors” video, ensuring the storytelling captured authentic human experiences that built empathy and trust. I also worked on the Blood Type Explainer video, helping simplify complex medical information into engaging, easy-to-digest visuals.

To amplify reach, I designed the social media assets, keeping them brand-aligned while compelling enough to drive engagement. Finally, I developed the lead generation form, ensuring that interested donors had a seamless and user-friendly way to register directly through the campaign.

Together, these efforts supported a 360° strategy that merged storytelling, education, design, and technology into one cohesive donor journey.

Impact

The “Change a Life” campaign achieved strong traction across digital channels and successfully increased awareness of platelet donation. The Meet Our Donors video generated high engagement and shares, humanizing the donor experience, while the Blood Type Explainer video educated thousands of viewers on why platelet donations matter. The social media designs amplified campaign reach with consistent branding, and the lead gen form streamlined registrations, resulting in a significant increase in donor sign-ups. Collectively, these efforts strengthened SANBS’s ability to attract, educate, and convert new donors, directly supporting their lifesaving mission.
